Try an Herb Instead of Another Pill

0

Many people feel that they take too many pills, whether they are prescription or over-the-counter, and they are concerned about the safety and long term effects of the things that they put into their bodies. And yet, they still feel the need for a little something to help them deal with the problems that trouble them from time to time. One answer to this dilemma is to go back to natural remedies.

Throughout history, plants and herbs have been used to treat aches, pains and other maladies. Plants and plant extracts have been used to deal with problems ranging from a simple sore throat to complex diseases such as schizophrenia. Sources range from the Chinese to Native Americans, with cures that have been passed down through generations of healers and today, you can find any number of them at a variety of websites.

One of the most all-encompassing sites is naturalherbsguide.com which provides herbal remedies for over 200 ailments, information on research into hundreds of herbs and advice on buying herbs. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is another interesting source of all types of great information that include natural remedies and folk cures, as well as recipes for many natural products. At powersource.com, the Cherokee Messenger lists many of the remedies practiced historically by different tribes. Chinese Medicine Tools provides many traditional Chinese herbal cures along with information about topics such as acupuncture and Tuina massage.

We don’t endorse any particular site and this list is merely a few of those available these days. But if you want to start looking into different ways to deal with your aches and pains, it’s a good starting point.

New book coming out by Margaret Roach

A bit about the book in Margaret’s words:

from marthaville,
to just margaret

IN DECEMBER 2007, I made the life-altering decision to walk away from New York City and my job as Editorial Director of Martha Stewart, a career many would describe as highly successful. But I craved completely different rewards: solitude, a return to the personal creativity of writing, and a closer connection to nature and my first passion, the garden I’d been making on weekends for 20 years. I moved to a rural New York State town of 300, began AWayToGarden.com (called “the best garden blog” by the New York Times and named for my prize-winning 1989 book), and wrote the dropout memoir “And I Shall Have Some Peace There” (February 2011). Today, I lecture and teach about what I call “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” and help clients create websites on the WordPress platform.

Beware of Root-bound Plants

1

Here is a great article from the Los Angeles Times about the perils of buying root-bound plants. I did not know this and found it very informative.

Our Christmas Tree Will Last a Lifetime

4

We got a new puppy this year so when it came time for a Christmas tree, we needed something that we could put on an end table so that she wouldn’t chew up the ornaments like our last puppy did. Rather than buy another fake tree or a small cut tree that we would just have to throw away, we decided to go with a live potted tree so that we could plant it in the backyard after Christmas. Now it will last a lifetime, just like the tools we sell.

Dixie helping Blake plant the Christmas tree

We had unusually warm weather this winter so we were able to get it planted before the snow that arrived yesterday. Blake dug that great hole with a DeWit garden spade and I am sure that he appreciated the assistance that he got from Dixie, the puppy, who chased the dirt clods and tried to help with the digging.

What a difference a day makes

Garden Tool Company Gives Back

0

We are a relatively new company, but almost as soon as we were up and running, Blake and I made the decision to give all that we could back to our community. After a bit of research, we decided to join Realities for Children Charities (RFCC) as business members and we give monthly to this awesome group that supports abused and neglected children in Larimer County, where we are located. We also give additional money, garden tools and a lot of our time to the activities hosted by RFCC, including Keeping Dreams Alive, the Realities Ride, the Realities Cup, NightLights, Santa’s Helpers’ Workshop and Bikes for Tykes.

Bike for Tykes

In addition to our contributions to RFCC, we have given garden tools to a variety of organizations. We have given trowels and soil scoops to both the Gardens on Spring Creek, a local gardening and education facility supported by the City of Fort Collins and to the Matthews House, a local organization providing support to teens and young adults, for their new garden. Additionally, we have given garden tools for the silent auctions for events and organizations including Golfing for Gavin, Alternatives to Violence, Hearts & Horses, Matthews House and The Family Center.

Finally, we contributed to MS and Colorado Gives, a one day fund raising campaign that includes matching funds from a number of area banks. We are very proud of the number of events and groups that we have been able to help support in our first year and look forward to doing even more in the years to come.

Christmas Gifts for the Arthritic Gardener

2

If you know a gardener that has trouble with arthritis or anything else that impairs their strength, you should consider the P-grip garden tool line from DeWit. These gardening tools are made with a unique handle that allows you to use both hands, one on the handle at the end and one on the shaft, giving you greater leverage.

Another great choice is ratchet pruning shears. These pruners include a ratchet mechanism that helps to cut through even tough wood with ease. You don’t need the hand strength required with a typical pruner.
